Summary.

Robert Garfield (Bobby), 11 years of age, lives in a house with his mother Liz Garfield. Bobby’s dad, Randall Garfield, died from a heart attack when Bobby was very young so Bobby never got to know his dad. Bobby’s relationship to his mother is not good. Liz seems to have quite a few personal problems, and that effects the relationship between Bobby and Liz.
Liz rents out the top floor in their house. One day a new tenant, Ted Brautigan, arrives. Liz seems not to like Ted, but Bobby does. After a while Bobby and Ted become really good friends. Ted is a bit strange and he seems to live in his own world at times. Sometimes his consciousness fades away and he talks about things that Bobby does not understand. Ted gives Bobby a job: He has to look for low men in yellow coats. Ted has a gift, he is able to look into other peoples minds. When Ted touches Bobby, Bobby gets the same ability for a while.
The relationship between Ted and Bobby develops into a very close relationship. One day Ted decides to leave and Bobby really does not want him to. Ted has to leave because the presence of the mysterious low men increases. Bobby tries to stop Ted from leaving, but he is not able to. The low men come and pick up Ted.
Bobby and his mother move to Massachusetts and Bobby turns into a criminal. Ted meant very much to Bobby and Ted will always be a part of Bobby.
